BMW’s M Division continues to show little interest in developing an M7, leaving the i7 M70 xDrive as the closest alternative. This model, which debuted nearly two years ago, delivers impressive performance for a luxury sedan, boasting up to 811 lb-ft (1,100 Nm) of torque and 650 brake horsepower (659 ps/485 kW). It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (0-97 kph) in 3.5 seconds, figures befitting a flagship vehicle, albeit limited to the electric variant.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive shares its battery pack with the xDrive60, featuring a 101.7 kWh unit that provides a range between 268 and 285 miles (431-459 km), as stated on the brand’s official website. The model starts at an MSRP of $168,500, requires approximately 12 hours to charge at Level 2, and reaches a top speed of 130 mph (210 kph).

In contrast, the top-tier internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the BMW 7 Series, the 760i xDrive, utilizes a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine producing 536 hp (544 ps/400 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels, it achieves 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, which can be optionally increased to 155 mph (250 kph). Pricing for this model begins at $122,400.

A hypothetical BMW M7 would need to surpass both the 760i xDrive and the i7 M70 xDrive in performance. Its 0-60 mph acceleration should be slightly quicker than 3.5 seconds, considering that the 2025 Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance accomplishes this in 3.3 seconds. The AMG features a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine with electric assistance, generating 791 hp (802 ps/590 kW) and 1,055 lb-ft (1,430 Nm) of torque, and is priced from $186,200. Therefore, an M7 could potentially approach a $200,000 price point.

Despite possessing the necessary expertise and resources, BMW’s M Division has no plans to produce a full-fledged M version of the 7 Series. Such a model would require enhancements including an electrified V8 engine, a retuned chassis, upgraded brakes, a sporty body kit, and a more dynamic interior to distinguish it from standard 7 Series models.

Nevertheless, independent designers have envisioned their own versions of an M7. The latest digital rendering by Kelsonik on Instagram presents a before-and-after comparison, showcasing a redesigned front fascia that replaces the dual-headlamp setup with a more streamlined design. The oversized grille has been reduced in size, resulting in a refreshed aesthetic. This raises the question: should BMW reconsider and develop an M7 after all?
