Mazda is preparing to launch the third generation of its popular compact SUV, the CX-5, aiming to rival the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. The current CX-5, introduced in 2016, has seen a decline in sales, trailing competitors like the Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, and Subaru Forester.

Anticipated to debut as a 2026 or 2027 model, the new CX-5 is expected to feature a more mature and utilitarian design. Renderings suggest a larger, illuminated grille, sizable headlights, flush door handles, and an overall more robust aesthetic. Notably, the vehicle appears larger, addressing previous criticisms about interior space. An extended length could provide additional room for backseat passengers and increased trunk capacity, enhancing its competitiveness in the compact SUV segment.

Under the hood, the 2026 CX-5 is rumored to introduce a hybrid engine to meet stricter emission standards. This setup may include a 24V mild-hybrid system paired with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine, delivering approximately 139 horsepower and 238 Nm of torque. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are expected to follow, aligning with Mazda’s commitment to eco-friendly technologies.

Inside, the new CX-5 is projected to offer a luxurious cabin with premium materials, ergonomic seats, and advanced technology. Features may include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a fully digital driver display, and an optional head-up display. Rear passengers could benefit from USB-C ports and adjustable climate controls, ensuring a comfortable experience for all occupants.

Mazda has not officially confirmed the release date for the 2026 CX-5, but reports suggest it could arrive in European markets by fall 2025, with a global release to follow. Pricing details remain undisclosed, but the base model is expected to start around $28,000, with higher trims reaching up to $40,000.

As Mazda prepares to unveil the next-generation CX-5, enthusiasts and potential buyers eagerly await a model that combines enhanced performance, increased interior space, and advanced technology to effectively compete in the crowded compact SUV market.
