New Promising Device Makes Vehicle-To-Load Possible For All Tesla Models

A new device called the PowerShare VP20 aims to provide Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities to all Tesla models. Developed by VortiPower, this device connects to a Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and converts the vehicle’s direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC), supplying power to two 120-volt household outlets. The PowerShare VP20 can deliver up to 3,500 watts, sufficient for most household appliances and power tools. Versions of the device are available for both NACS (North America) and CCS2 (Europe) plugs, with corresponding local voltage standards. VortiPower has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the development of this device.

Bi-directional charging, which allows electric vehicles to supply power to external devices or homes, has become an important feature for EV buyers. While Tesla’s Cybertruck supports this functionality through its Powershare feature, other Tesla models currently lack this capability. The J3400 (NACS) standard includes this functionality, but Tesla has not enabled it in software for its other vehicles. In 2023, Tesla announced plans to implement bi-directional charging across all its vehicles by 2025, but this has not yet been realized.

The PowerShare VP20 offers a potential solution for Tesla owners seeking V2L capabilities. However, it’s unclear how Tesla will respond to this third-party device, especially considering the use of the “Powershare” name. The success of this initiative may depend on the relationship between VortiPower and Tesla, and whether they can collaborate to provide this much-desired functionality to Tesla owners.
